Wellabe is celebrating its 95th anniversary in 2024. For nearly a century, Wellabe has been providing insurance solutions to help people prepare for tomorrow and live better today. 

In April 1929, Watson Powell Sr. founded American Republic Insurance Company in Des Moines, Iowa. Six months later, the Great Depression hit. But the company weathered the storm through fiscal responsibility and following Powell’s founding principle of caring for customers.

Today, Wellabe’s compassion runs deep. It’s filled with generous team members who are connected by a deep desire to help others.

“It has been an honor to take on the role of CEO for a company that truly ‘walks the talk’ when it comes to caring for our customers and each other,” says Wellabe CEO Dave Keith, who took the reins in January. “I am pleased to share that as we celebrate our 95th anniversary, Wellabe is financially strong and prepared for continued success for the next 95 years and beyond.”

Wellabe started with 200 charter policies in 1929. Over the past 95 years, the company has grown to include:

• Six subsidiary insurance companies
• Licenses in 49 states and the District of Columbia
• More than 775,000 policies 
• Over 400 team members
• A designation as a great place to work

Wellabe will be launching new products in 2024, including the recently announced Short-term Care insurance. Wellabe will also maintain the strength of its current life and health insurance plans, including Medicare Supplement, Hospital Indemnity, and Preneed insurance.

Wellabe will continue to help people protect their health and financial well-being. The promise, “We’ll always be,” and what it represents informed the company’s rebranding last year to Wellabe. The transformation was more than changing a name and logo. Wellabe better reflects the dedicated people who do their best to serve customers in reliable and real ways.
