IMPORTANT: This is a fixed indemnity policy, NOT health insurance

This fixed indemnity policy may pay you a limited dollar amount if you’re sick or hospitalized. You’re still responsible for paying the cost of your care.

  • The payment you get isn’t based on the size of your medical bill.
  • There might be a limit on how much this policy will pay each year.
  • This policy isn’t a substitute for comprehensive health insurance.
  • Since this policy isn’t health insurance, it doesn’t have to include most Federal consumer protections that apply to health insurance.

Looking for comprehensive health insurance?

  • Visit HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325) to find health coverage options.
  • To find out if you can get health insurance through your job, or a family member’s job, contact the employer.

Questions about this policy?

  • For questions or complaints about this policy, contact your State Department of Insurance. Find their number on the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ website (naic.org) under “Insurance Departments.”
  • If you have this policy through your job, or a family member’s job, contact the employer.

A hospital stay can be upsetting — to your health, your wallet, and your family. Even if you have other medical insurance, some costs may not be covered. That’s when Hospital Indemnity insurance can provide peace of mind in your time of need.

Hospital Indemnity insurance complements your existing health insurance by giving you cash to help with the costs your plan doesn’t cover.

What you can expect with Wellabe’s Hospital Indemnity plan

  • There’s no deductible, and you receive payment even if you have other insurance.
  • You’re paid directly, and you may use the payment however you want.1
  • You’ll be guaranteed issue if you’re between the ages of 60 and 79 when you sign the application.
  • If you live with another person, you’ll receive a 7% discount on your premiums.2
  • With no network of hospitals, you can choose any hospital you’d like.
  • Your policy remains in force as long as your premiums are paid on time.

How Hospital Indemnity insurance works

If you’re between the ages of 18 and 85, you can apply for Hospital Indemnity insurance. It pays you a cash benefit for each day you're billed for a hospital stay. You choose both:

  • The number of days (3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 21, or 31)
  • The cash benefit amount per day (from $100 to $600 in increments of $25)

If you remain out of the hospital for 60 continuous days, your policy’s benefit period resets.

Hospital Indemnity insurance coverage

Wellabe’s plan also pays cash benefits for:

  • Emergency room services for injuries
  • Observation unit monitoring
  • Inpatient mental health services
  • Travel to the hospital or medical facility and/or a hospital stay

Optional rider benefits

Hospital indemnity insurance also allows you to choose optional benefits at an additional cost, including:

  • Ambulance or urgent care center services
  • A cancer diagnosis
  • Outpatient surgery
  • Outpatient therapy and chiropractic
  • Skilled nursing services

FAQ

Hospitalization is expensive on its own, but it’s easy to overlook the additional costs you can incur while you’re hospitalized. Deductibles and copays will start piling up, and you may require follow-up outpatient care or a stay in a nursing facility.

Hospital Indemnity insurance is supplemental insurance that you can add to your overall health insurance portfolio. It pays you a specified amount for each day of covered service you receive, no matter what the final billed charges are.

The average cost to visit an emergency room is around $1,400, according to a study by the Health Care Cost Institute. If you need more time under doctor supervision, your overnight stay will add up quickly. The cost for an average hospital stay, inclusive of all treatment along the way, hops up to a daunting $9,300 without insurance. This doesn’t include the cost for external factors, such as lodging for loved ones who visit or any follow-up rehab.

Wellabe’s Hospital Indemnity base plan includes benefits for an emergency room visit, observation unit services, hospital confinement, transportation and lodging, and inpatient mental health assistance.

Four out of 10 U.S. adults say their household has used up all or most of their savings due to their health care debt, and nearly 18% of those with health care debt say they don’t think they will ever pay it off.

If you don’t have a large “emergency fund” to cover tens of thousands of dollars in unexpected medical expenses, a Hospital Indemnity insurance plan can offer peace of mind. The coverage will help you keep more of your savings account and retirement income intact, rather than paying for medical bills.

Those on Medicare Advantage (Part C) are often ideal candidates for Hospital Indemnity insurance to help fill in gaps. People ages 65 to 84 make up about one in three hospital visits, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Medicare plans rarely cover this entire cost. With Medicare Advantage, for example, the maximum out-of-pocket cost is $6,700 — more than most Americans have in an emergency fund.
