Wellabe employee groups share time, skills, and donations to help communities thrive

At Wellabe, we don't just talk about making a difference — we make it happen. In 2024, our employee resource groups (ERGs) provided pathways for employees to turn our values — Be dedicated, Be trustworthy, Be determined, Be collaborative, Be open, Be generous, and Be better — into action, both inside and outside our walls.

Charitable Giving group: For a better tomorrow

In 2024, Wellabe continued supporting various community organizations, such as United Way, Meals from the Heartland, Rebuilding Together, American Cancer Society, and Capitol City Pride. We were pleased to see an increase in donations made on behalf of employee requests and individual board service.

Additionally, in 2024, we made multi-year commitments to support Bravo – Passport to Culture, Greater Des Moines Public Art Foundation, and our neighbor, Mercy College, as it expands and improves its campus. We also have multi-year commitments to support Wesley Life – Meals on Wheels, Pro Iowa Stadium, and Global Plaza.

Volunteer group: Hands-on, hearts open

In 2024, our remarkable Wellabe teammates logged 1,723 volunteer time-off (VTO) hours. They included hosting two significant company-sponsored events: Rebuilding Together, where employees dedicated a total of 166 hours to revitalizing our community; and Meals from the Heartland, where teammates contributed 89 hours to packing meals for children in need.

Our employees also participated in a diverse range of volunteer opportunities throughout the year, including:

  • Meals on Wheels: Wellabe has continued its long-standing partnership with WesleyLife since 1994, with volunteers delivering meals to residents two weeks each month.
  • MLK day of service: On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we served at Bidwell Pantry, honoring Dr. King's legacy through community service.
  • Hydroponic farm: We had three volunteering opportunities at the hydroponic farm, where our efforts contributed to sustainable agriculture and Meals on Wheels food security for residents in need.
  • School supply drive and donation: Our school drive was a success, providing much-needed supplies to students.
  • Blizzard Bags packing: Our Des Moines team packed Blizzard Bags for Meals on Wheels, ensuring that those in need had access to essential supplies during harsh weather conditions.
  • WesleyLife lunch and learn: We hosted an informative lunch and learn session alongside WesleyLife, fostering community engagement and education.
  • Anawin gift card drive: Partnering with the DEI and Charitable ERGs, we successfully conducted a gift card drive to support Anawin.
  • Blooming with Hope campaign: In partnership with the Charitable ERG, we launched the Blooming with Hope campaign, spreading positivity within our community while also raising money for cancer research.
  • Prairie seed harvesting: Our team participated in prairie seed harvesting, contributing to environmental conservation efforts.
  • Adopt-a-family holiday gifting: We continued our tradition of spreading extra holiday cheer by joining forces to donate, shop, wrap, and deliver gifts to five families.
  • New partnership with a local school PTA: Our ERG donated $500 worth of gift cards to a Des Moines school's PTA. They used the funds to purchase blankets, backpacks, stuffed animals, cute toys, and more for their holiday store, making so many kids feel extra special.

Culture Club and Recognition group: A year of fun and appreciation

Our Culture Club and Recognition ERG worked hard to show teammates how we value their efforts. Here's a peek at the events we held:

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion group: Continuing Wellabe’s commitment

In 2024, we enhanced learning opportunities through:

  • The largest DEI book club event yet
  • Fun-filled trivia events — Women’s History Team Trivia and Multicultural Holiday Quiz
  • Guest speakers — thanks to Dwana Bradley from the Iowa Juneteenth Observance, Cecily Robinson from Easterseals Iowa, and Leo Landis from the State Historical Society
  • A live music event, featuring Wellabe’s own influencer Abe Goldstien, and the Java Jews, who treated employees to traditional klezmer and other holiday tunes
