April King embodies all Wellabe’s core values in her role as Vice President, Chief Human Resource Officer. As a strategic partner to the executive leadership team, an executive advisor, and a key player in shaping human resource talent and engagement strategies, she demonstrates dedication and collaboration daily.
April’s journey to her current position wasn’t a direct path.
“My first career was in retail, which drove my interest in the beauty industry,” she says. “Soon I was an executive leader running various functions. That service mindset and leadership experience complements what I get to do daily at Wellabe,” she explains.
A LinkedIn glitch sparked her interest to join Wellabe.
“At my former workplace, I kept getting pinged congratulating me on a promotion that was a few years in the past. When I went to LinkedIn to see if I’d been hacked, the first thing I saw was an interesting job opening for an Organizational Change Coach.”
That moment connected her with someone who would significantly influence her career.
“Our former Chief Human Resource Officer Meg Brown set the stage for being able to maintain a positive and fun workplace while managing sometimes challenging work,” she says.
April is grateful for the talented team at Wellabe, which has contributed to some of her best accomplishments.
“We really meet our employees where they are at. Human Resources at Wellabe is a function that serves both the business and our people,” she says. “Creating strategies to best serve our employees in their lifecycle is incredibly rewarding.”
When reflecting on her favorite work memories, April finds it hard to choose which ones.
“There are so many laughs that happen each day. A few that stand out are all the summer events with our Des Moines and Omaha teams, Meals from the Heartland, volunteering with coworkers for various causes, and enjoying the day to day with the HR and facilities team,” she says.
While April looks forward to continuing her career path at Wellabe, she is unsure of the exact path she will take.
“I am adamant that I have the best career in the world. I’m always expanding and growing in mindset and skills,” she says.
Outside of work, April enjoys spending time with her family, taking peaceful walks, and maintaining an early-to-bed, early-to-rise routine.
